Orcinol is a small-molecule natural phenol involved in the production of a dye called orcein used for the staining of cells and chromosomes. Orcinol monohydrate is usually used to prepare a colorimetric reagent known as Bial's reagent for the determination of RNA, DNA, and hexoses.
Orcinol monohydrate has been used to prepare Bial's reagent for Bial's orcinol assay for pentose sugars. It is also used in the preparation of orcinol solution suitable for staining TLC plates and, measuring rhamnolipids in orcinol dye assays. Orcinol monohydrate has been used for the RNA assay.
